In addition to Easter cake and Easter eggs, an ancient symbol of Easter is the motanka doll. Our ancestors created this amulet a week before the big holiday, and when the time came, they went to church with it. Each girl had to make a doll to protect her from all evil and to breathe good intentions and bright feelings into her owner.

Olha Rondiak’s motankys have a similar meaning. The army on the chessboard carries goodwill and seeks only one thing – to protect. The dolls, which were passed down through generations, have reached our time in the modern incarnation of the talented American-Ukrainian artist.
