Vereshchak Oleksandr

Oleksandr Vereshchak was born in 1971 in Dniprodzerzhynsk (now Kamianske).

He studied at the Yevhen Vuchetych Art School in Dnipro (now the Dnipro Regional Theatre and Art College), Faculty of Monumental Painting. Later he studied at the Kharkiv State Art Institute (now Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts), Faculty of Monumental Painting. He graduated in 1995.

In 1991, he met the artist Marharyta Zinets (Alfiorova), with whom he later formed a creative duo.

1998 – moves to Kyiv and participates in a series of training seminars “Video Context”, which were held by the critic Erkki Gutamo (Finland) at the Sorsa Centre. Marek Wasilewski and Mirosław Kaczmarek (Poland) conducted a series of workshops. During the seminars, Oleksandr Vereshchak and Margarita Zinets created two works and formed a creative duo. These were the works “Siesta/Moments” and “Sprechen zu Deutsch?”.

In the same year, the Vereshchak-Zinets duo continued their cooperation with the Soros Centre and took part in the exhibition “Crimean Project II” curated by Marta Kuzma. Subsequently, the artists, together with Oleksandr Hnylytskyi, Ilya Chychkan, Maksym Mamsikov, Hlib Katchuk and others, joined the group exhibition “Accommodation” curated by Oleksandr Soloviov in Poland.

In 1998, Vereshchak and Zinets participated in the first Dreamcatcher International Festival of Video Art and Short Films, curated by Nadiya Prydnich.

In 1999, Vereshchak and Zinets presented their works at eight group projects and opened their first solo exhibition “Sites abroad” in Ipswich (UK). The second solo exhibition of Vereshchak and Zinets in collaboration with the British artist George Saxon was curated by Nadiya Prydnich.

Since 2000, Vereshchak and Zinets have participated in the Kyiv International Festival of Media Arts.

In 2001, the artists took part in the Ivent City residency at the Bauhaus College (Dessau, Germany).

In 2003-2005, the Vereshchak-Zinets duo participated in many international projects, including Young Ukrainian Artists (curated by Peter Doroshenko) in the United States, Video Zone Biennial (Tel Aviv, Israel), Beyond the Threshold as part of the Art Moscow fair, Difficult Body. Art initiative. The Last East European Show” in Serbia, “WRO 03 Globalica. 10th International Media Art Biennale” in Poland, 2nd Prague Biennale in the Czech Republic (2005). The duo also joined the large-scale curatorial projects of Alexander Solovyov “The First Collection” (2003), “Goodbye, Weapons!” (2004), “Reality Check” (2005), etc.

In 2005, the Vereshchak-Zinets duo ceased their activities.

In 2009 – the first solo exhibition “Flat Real”.

In 2011 – the exhibition “Silver”.

He lives and works in Kyiv.

Currently, the artist’s works of several series are exhibited at the Art Ukraine Gallery.
