Chychkan Ilya

Born in 1967 in Kyiv.

In 2004 he was invited to the international forum Manifesta (San Sebastian, Spain).

In 2009, he represented Ukraine at the 53rd Venice Biennale.

During 1988-1989, he was a member of the Paris Commune art group, was the trendsetter of squat fashion, often finding vintage items at flea markets.

Participant of numerous solo and group exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad: the São Paulo Art Biennale (1996), the Second Biennale in Johannesburg (1997), the Prague Biennale (2003), the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009).

The artist’s works are kept in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna), the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and private collections.

He is a member of the Ukrainian transavant-garde art movement “Ukrainian New Wave”. He is known for his eccentric antics at social events, provocative projects, and a series of works depicting primates, which he still creates today. He lives and works in Kyiv and Goa, India.

Currently, the artist’s works from several series are on display at Art Ukraine Gallery.
